Mother accused of murdering her two children to cash in on their insurance is charged with fraudulently trying to get a $300,000 death benefit from jail

A mother accused of murdering her two children for money has also been charged with trying to fraudulently claim a $300,000 superannuation payout while in jail.

Gold Coast woman Maree Mavis Crabtree was charged with killing her children Jonathan, 26, and Erin, 18, in January 2018 and staging their deaths as suicides.

Crabtree was accused of dishonestly obtaining welfare payments, as well as two counts of fraud and attempted fraud.

Crabtree was charged with eight further offences on Monday. 

She is accused of dishonestly obtaining disability payments between 2010 and 2016, the Courier-Mail reported.

Crabtree also allegedly claimed a superannuation benefit of $300,000 between December and January. She is also accused of trying to dishonestly claim an insurance payout in 2015.

Crabtree allegedly used medication to keep her children in bed and then claimed disability payments on their behalf that she kept.

She then allegedly killed both of her children and framed the deaths as suicide in order to claim superannuation benefits.

Jonathan’s body was found at an Upper Coomera home in July 2017, while Erin died at a Maudsland home in September 2012, where Crabtree was living at the time.

Crabtree’s former lawyer said she would defend the charges, but her case is now being handled by Legal Aid.

The case is next due back before the Brisbane Magistrates Court in July.
