  • She discovered item cost ‘only $14’ despite her best friend usually spending $50
  • Mum contacted the store owner asking whether she’d forgotten to send the rest
  • Many were shocked at how the mum had the audacity to ask such a question

A ‘confused’ mum has asked a store owner whether there was a mistake after the gift her best friend got for her daughter’s birthday cost ‘only $14’.

The woman sent an ‘awkward’ message to the seller explaining how her friend ‘typically’ sends $50 gifts so she thought it was strange when she discovered the item cost just a fraction of her usual spending.

In the ‘super cringe’ email titled ‘inquiry into gift order’, the mum asked the seller whether she had forgotten to send the rest of the gifts to her daughter after she only received one item in the mail.

‘Hello! I’m curious if you can check an order that was placed a couple of weeks ago. She is a very good friend (essentially a family member) and she recently bought my daughter cute gift cards for her birthday,’ the email read.

‘I’m very happy with the cards but only one pack came in the mail. I checked the price for this order and it’s $14… It’s very odd to receive a gift for so little from this close friend.

‘I’m hoping to avoid an awkward exchange where I ask her directly whether the order is correct. I appreciate your assistance in checking.’

After the email was re-posted in an Instagram group, many were shocked at how the mum had the audacity to ask such a question.

‘Tell me you’re materialistic without telling me your materialistic,’ one wrote.

Another said: ‘The fact that people are this petty and greedy about a gift they have received… so cringe.’

One woman added: ‘Holy moly. This is so cringe. The petty dreams queen in me would want to send this message to the lady who bought them,’ while one said: ‘I am genuinely speechless. This broke me.’

Others labelled the woman ‘rude’, ‘entitled’, an ‘awful friend’ and a ‘Karen’ while dozens insisted they have ‘never’ looked up the price of their gifts.

‘We’re in the middle of a pandemic, Karen. Your “family friend, essentially a family member)” was probably hit hard. Just be happy you got a present,’ one wrote.

‘Tell me your name is Karen without telling me your name is Karen,’ another said.

While one added: ‘Imagine receiving a thoughtful gift and immediately checking how much it was.’

Meanwhile, many saw the funny side to the situation, with one saying: ‘Are you alright babe? You barely spent $50 on my daughter’s birthday.’

While another joked: ‘I need to see the spreadsheet of gift values received throughout the years.’
