A mum has sparked a debate on social media over where you should be storing your grocery bags after claiming ‘every Aussie’ keeps a pile on the side of their fridge.

Emmy Rachelle, from Adelaide, shared a now-viral TikTok video showing how she efficiently folded the grocery bags into ‘little triangles’ to be neatly stored away in the boot of her car.

‘Every Aussie piles their bags on the side of the fridge. Hey, I don’t make the rules but I do sometimes get anxiety thinking it’s a fire hazard… and honestly, it really doesn’t look that nice so I put in some time to take care of this,’ she said.

To fold the bag, she demonstrated that you should first flatten it out completely, then fold it in thirds before folding the two sides towards the middle.

‘Now, the way I fold my bag is very technical. Make the first fold just below the 80 per cent. The second fold where that line is, and the third fold right to the top,’ she said.

After this, you need to fold the bottom corners into each other to make a tiny triangle and repeat this on both sides until you tuck the end into a pocket, leaving the handles out.

She said the bag should resemble triangle-shaped carrots.

‘There was a lot of bags to fold, but it was very satisfying once it was done,’ she said.

To maximise space, she filled an environmental bag with all the perfectly folded triangle-shaped plastic bags.

‘Look at how much organised this is. These are going to go live in my car, which will hopefully force me to use them,’ she said.

How to fold a reusable plastic bag in five simple steps

1. Flatten the plastic bag out completely.

2. Next, fold it in thirds.

3. Once the bag has been folded into thirds, fold the two sides inwards towards the middle.

4. Repeat this on both sides.

5. Tuck the end into the pocket, leaving handles out and the bag should resemble a tiny neat triangle-shaped carrot.

Her video has since been viewed more than 200,000 times with many admitting they stuff the side of their fridge with reusable grocery bags.

‘I always shove them beside the fridge, definitely not proud of my laziness but you’re not alone,’ one woman wrote.

Another added: ‘I definitely store all my shopping bags beside my fridge. The gap between fridge and wall is much bigger than yours, all our reusable bags go there.’

But many said they prefer storing them in other areas, including under the sink, in their laundry room, pantry cupboard or car.

‘We always have a bag filled with other bags in the laundry… I thought that was Aussie. Dad would yell at me if I put bags beside the fridge,’ one wrote.

And while another said: ‘If you don’t put them under the sink, you’re not Aussie.’

Meanwhile, some supermarket employees responded to her video, begging shoppers to ‘unfold’ the triangle bags when they are at checkout.

‘As a register operator, I hate the bags that are folded up like this. It is a pain to undo,’ one wrote, while another said: ‘As a checkout chick, I hate having to undo the plastic bags when they are folded like that but it’s an awesome space saving hack.

And one employee said: I work at the checkouts… Customers who bring in bags that are folded very small waste our time. We love if you could just scrunch them all up and chuck them into one bag.

‘It’s quicker for us to just grab and pack up the customer’s groceries.’
