  • The mum noticed the cut-priced stock on the shelves of her local supermarket
  • Others reacted furiously to the post – complaining of high prices near them

A thrifty mum has shocked her fellow bargain hunters with a picture of  $2.99 iceberg lettuce after prices soared to $12 for the vegetable in recent months.

The mum said she spotted the cut-price vegetable at her favourite independent grocer – and was thrilled to be able to put it back on the menu.

The woman’s picture showed individually wrapped lettuces on a huge pile in the centre of the store.

‘Where is this, I would travel for a decent lettuce, I bought one the other day for $10 and I still can’t stop thinking about it,’ one woman wrote on the posts.

While others congratulated the mum, from Wodonga on the NSW-Victoria border for her find.

‘This is amazing, happy days,’ one mum said.

But others appeared less than impressed.

‘I can never find good deals, the best I have got for lettuce lately is $5.99,’ one said.

‘I find posts so hard and frustrating… I try to support local in SA, but when they charge $12.99 kg for apples and everyone else is selling them at $2.99 kg??? I can’t afford that,’ said another.

While others seemed too wrapped up in the store’s use of plastic bags to care about the price.

‘Why would you wrap them all in single-use plastic, gross,’ one woman complained.

Others joked the bags were for protection – so people didn’t feel they could peel a few extra leaves off another lettuce.

‘True, they are so valuable these days they need the extra protection,’ one woman said.

While the original poster said customers can choose to leave the bag in store where they are re used by the produce department.

The price increase impacted supermarket stock as well as major fast food retailers who quickly substituted the popular green vegetable for cabbage.

While other restaurants upped their prices for anything containing ice burg lettuce or took it off the menu all together.
