A mum has revealed why a humble lemon is the ‘best’ cleaning product you’ll ever use – and demonstrated the many uses for the fruit from removing rust to deep cleaning your shower.

Stylist and mother Liz Amaya, from Brisbane, posted a short video on Instagram, showing how she uses old lemon halves for cleaning – and how you can too in order to get a sparkling home.

‘When life gives you lemons, clean with them. This is how I use lemons around the home,’ Liz posted.

1. Freshening the fridge

The first way you can use old lemons is to freshen up your fridge.

Liz said she puts an old lemon half inside the door of the fridge to ‘eliminate odours’.

The citric acid in the lemon should work to absorb all of the bad smells, and replace them with a nice fresh smell.

It is worth remembering that you will need to change your lemon half at least once a week in order to keep things smelling good.

2. Removing rust

The second way many use lemons in the home is to remove rust stains from metals that might have appeared around your taps and knives.

‘Simply rub a lemon half onto the stains to help get rid of them,’ Liz said.

The reason why lemon works so well is because the acidity of lemon juice reacts with the limescale (calcium carbonate) or the rust (iron oxide) to soften and dissolve the deposits.

Lemon can also work a treat on stains on cutting boards, bowls and plates.

3. Cleaning your shower

Thirdly, Liz said lemon is great for cleaning your shower glass.

Again, the reason why lemon is so effective is because lemons are acids.

They can eliminate stains caused by other acids, or combine with alkaline compounds to create powerful chemical reactions.

4. Cleaning your dishwasher

Finally, lemon works incredibly well at ensuring your dishes come out of the dishwasher sparkling every time.

All you need to do is place the lemon on the top tray of the dishwasher amongst the dirty dishes, and then run the appliance on a regular cycle.

The citric acid in the lemon cleans limescale and deodorises the dishwasher while also leaving the dishes looking sparkling clean.

The clever hack should only be used on occasion and not every time you use your dishwasher, as the acidity is believed to affect the rubber in the appliance.
