Mum-of-two is shocked when an ‘artisanal cafe’ serves her toddler vegan ‘Vegemite on toast’

Mum-of-two is shocked when an ‘artisanal cafe’ serves her toddler ‘Vegemite on toast’ – but it’s not what she expected

  • A mother-of-two from Sydney has shared her dismay at cafe culture in Australia
  • She decided to order plain Vegemite toast for her young daughter while out
  • Grace Jennings-Edquist’s daughter said it tasted ‘yucky’ and like nuts
  • She questioned the toast and was told it’s a ‘homemade blend’, a vegan spread

A mother-of-two has shared her dismay at discovering plain Vegemite toast she ordered for her young daughter was in fact something entirely different.

Grace Jennings-Edquist, who lives in Sydney, took to Twitter on September 18 with a photo of the ‘toast’ and offending spread which was much lighter in colour than typical Vegemite.

She had ordered the breakfast dish for her young daughter but immediately regretted it once she realised what it was.

‘This artisanal cafe culture has gone TOO FAR. Ordered Vegemite for my young kids’ toast today. Daughter said it tasted ‘yucky’ and like nuts,’ she explained.

REALITY: 'Turns out the cafe only does 'homemade Vegemite' which is a vegan concoction involving sesame and soy,' she said

‘Lucky my baby isn’t allergic. Hard no!’

While Ms Jennings-Edquist found it hard enough to reconcile that she had purchased a spread that wasn’t actually Vegemite, more concerning was the inclusion of allergy-prone substances.

Her followers were quick to suggest this would pose a problem for many parents.

‘At the very least they shouldn’t call it Vegemite. Once a cafe offered a “chocolate milkshake” on its menu, which had actually been flavoured with a BS vegan peanut brownie rather than choc syrup. My son had an anaphylactic reaction to it,’ one woman replied.

‘Looks like mould on bread, ewww. Also they should say what it is upfront because, as you pointed out, there’s a little (huge, major, dire) thing called “allergies,”‘ said another.

A third pointed out that Vegemite is already vegan so there is no real need to create your own recipe, if that’s your main concern.

‘What makes Vegemite not vegan anyway? Salt. Leftover yeast. Malt extract. Surely those ingredients get a green tick?’ Said another.
