Mum reveals how she transformed her outdoor setting for $100 after the glass table top exploded in the hot weather

  • Instead of tossing the outdoor setting away they replaced the top with timber

A crafty Australian mum has revealed exactly how she managed to salvage her outdoor setting for $100  after the glass table top ‘randomly’ exploded in the hot summer sun.

The amateur home decorator said she was shocked when the glass ‘shattered for no apparent reason’ last week just before Christmas Day.

‘There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the rest of the setting so we really wanted to salvage it,’ she wrote in a detailed post on Facebook.

One trip to Bunnings Warehouse appeared to give her the inspiration she needed to transform the outdoor setting with many commenting on the post to say the upcycled version looks better than the original.

‘It took us longer to find what we needed in Bunnings than it actually took to repair the table,’ she said, explaining that it’s helpful her husband is handy with tools.

The couple settled on a Merbau fence panel for their new table top supported by matching pickets, which they sanded back and varnished to make it more resistant to wear and tear.

More than 4,500 people liked the instructional post with hundreds stopping to comment on the family’s efforts.

‘Awesome refurbishing it looks great! I wish there were more people who would think out of the box like you and not just think to purchase another table. Saving landfill,’ one woman said.

‘I reckon you have started a trend, well done, people will be wanting their glass to smash now,’ added another.

‘Brilliant idea, it looks amazing. Probably even better than the glass and more practical,’ one woman praised.

But some people were concerned by their choice of materials.

‘Did they suggest any surface products so your food is safe? I tried to make a table out of wood and they said it wouldn’t be food safe,’ one woman said.

But others said it would be fine as long as food wasn’t being prepared directly on the surface.

And it appears others have had the same issues with their glass tables shattering out of the blue, with one man who used to work for an outdoor furniture store explaining that it is known to happen during sudden changes in temperature.

‘Our glass table did that years ago. It was a hot day and then the weather changed suddenly to cold and it went. I must say I love the timber look better,’ one woman said.
