Mural painted of Labor leader Bill Shorten

A new mural of Bill Shorten has taken aim at the Labor leader’s apparent refusal to take a firm stance on the Adani project.

The artwork, painted by Sydney street artist Scott Marsh, shows two images of the 50-year-old, one as a ‘hipster’ version of the Labor leader and the other as a ‘fair dinkum high vis’ version.

Mr Shorten has backtracked the party’s stance on the controversial mine, which is planned for central Queensland and would be Australia’s biggest.

He has welcomed the jobs that will be created by the new mine, and said he is not ‘anti-mining’.

Mr Shorten’s comments come as the Batman by-election looms, with Labor attempting to retain the Melbourne seat.

Mr Marsh shared photos of the mural to his Instagram on Saturday.

‘Who is the real Bill Shorten?’ the image is captioned.

The ‘hipster’ Mr Shorten is holding a takeaway coffee and wearing a scarf, while the ‘fair dinkum’ version is wearing a hard hat labelled ‘Adani’ and carrying a can of XXXX beer.

Mr Marsh is known for his colourful murals often painted in Sydney’s inner west, and his art has attracted controversy in the past.

During the same-sex marriage survey Mr Marsh painted a mural of former Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

The mural depicted Mr Abbott – an outspoken opponent of same-sex marriage – as marrying himself, and was titled ‘Tony Loves Tony’.

Another mural featuring Mr Abbott wearing a wedding dress and a shirtless Cardinal George Pell was painted on the side of the Botany View Hotel in Newtown, to celebrate same-sex marriage becoming legal.

Both murals were defaced and painted over by protesters, while the mural featuring Mr Abbott and Mr Pell – known as ‘The Happy Ending’ – attracted a group of Christians who were seen praying and genuflecting opposite the mural in November.

Mr Marsh is also known for his mural of George Michael as ‘Saint George’ in tribute to the late singer at the time of his death in January 2017, and ‘Kanye Loves Kanye’, an image of Kanye West kissing and embracing himself.
