Murder suspect with lump on his forehead stares down NYC judge

Idris Abdul-Muhaymin, 45, appeared in a Bronx courtroom on Thursday night

A New York City man suspected of stabbing a security guard to death while on the lam from suspicion in his lotto-winner uncle’s murder has appeared in court with mystery injuries.

Idris Abdul-Muhaymin, 45, was arraigned in Bronx Criminal Court late Thursday on charges of murder and manslaughter in the stabbing death of 45-year-old security guard Wanda Rios.

Abdul-Muhaymin stared intently at the judge, and had a lump on his head and a bandage wrapped around his left arm. It is unclear whether the injuries were sustained during his arrest on Wednesday night, or in another altercation.

Prior to his arrest, police had been looking for Abdul-Muhaymin since last month, when his uncle was found stabbed to death in his Mott Haven apartment soon after winning the lottery.

Investigators say Abdul-Muhaymin, who was drowning in gambling debts, is now an official suspect in his uncle’s gruesome murder, but he has only been charged in Rios’ murder as yet.

Cops were called to M.N.I. Security Specialist Inc in the Bronx shortly before 2pm on Wednesday, where they found licensed security guard Rios inside, suffering from a stabbing wound to her neck.

A bloody screwdriver was found nearby. Rios was rushed to the hospital where she was later pronounced dead. She was married and leaves behind a nine-year-old daughter.

The business’s storefront bears an ironic tagline: ‘We’re always ready for any confrontation’.

The NYPD quickly released surveillance footage of the man they believed to be responsible for the murder. About 10 hours later, they located Abdul-Muhaymin and took him into custody.

He’s no stranger to a jail cell. He spent decades in prison for shooting another person to death in the Bronx in 1991.

A motive in the murder of Rios is not yet clear. Abdul-Muhaymin is the brother-in-law of the man who owns the security firm, and cops say he knew Rios, but the nature of their relationship was not clear. Investigators do not believe they were romantic.

Abdul-Muhaymin is also a suspect in the death of his uncle, Owen Dillard. The 73-year-old was found stabbed to death in his Mott Haven apartment shortly after winning $50,000 in the lottery. Family members said his nephew was swimming in gambling debts.

Detectives said at the time that there were no signs of a forced entry and Dillard may have been robbed.

Abdul-Muhaymin is being held without bail on Rikers Island. He is next due in court on Tuesday.
