My Kitchen Rules chef Colin Fassnidge shares his top tips for stretching the family food budget with clever leftover meal ideas


Colin Fassnidge knows his way around a kitchen. 

On Monday, the chef and former My Kitchen Rules star shared his top tips for stretching out the weekly supermarket shop and saving money. 

In a column for The Daily Telegraph, the 46-year-old explained that stale bread can be a blessing.

‘Any old bread you’ve got, freeze it, blend it and when you buy mince, bulk it out so you can get double the amount when you are making meatballs or bolognaise sauce,’ he wrote. 

Colin also has multiple steps for a roast or barbecue chicken – after you’ve eaten the parts you want first, save the rest for a salad for the next day’s lunch. 

When you’re down to the bones, make a stock or soup – and he suggests doing the same with leftover lamb meat and bones.

Additionally, he suggests filling up on pulses like white beans, lentils, chickpeas, which are cheap and will keep you satisfied longer. 

Colin also says that finding bargains at your local local butcher and fish monger is ideal, and avoid buying out of season ingredients that are imported. 

It comes after Colin was announced as the new host of Kitchen Nightmares Australia.

The series originally soared to popularity in the UK and the US while fronted by celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay. 

The former My Kitchen Rules star has insisted however that he won’t be exhibiting quite the same short temper that his British counterpart does. 

‘If you are after a show screaming and shouting in people’s faces, that is not what I want to do,’ he said.
