My Kitchen Rules: Excruciating 90 seconds of TV that left mother and son team devastated: ‘Really hard to hear’

The new season of My Kitchen Rules premiered this week and Tuesday night’s episode has already left one pair of contestants heartbroken.

Mother and son team Sonia and Marcus were served up a disappointing score of 28 out of 50 by the other contestants in the Instant Restaurant round.

The pair cooked up an Italian-themed three-course meal, consisting of an entrée of lobster crumpet, main of squid ink pasta and a Margarita Bombe Alaska dessert.

Some of the other foodies were so unimpressed with the Adelaide teams effort they gave only five points for the entire meal.

Meanwhile, judges Manu Feildel and Colin Fassnidge dished out something for Sonia and Marcus to smile about, scoring their desert 10 out of 10.

Still, it was not enough to take the sting out of the overall verdict.

‘We went from having a really good feeling from the feedback from the bombe Alaska to smacked right back in the face with that score,’ a disappointed Marcus said during a feedback session.

‘I don’t even know where to look any more, like this is awkward. It just seemed awfully low.”

Sonia agreed she was surprised by the harsh verdict, which included some really terrible reviews of the main from Manu and Colin, as well as the other teams.

‘I thought we maybe deserved a couple of extra points from the guests,’ she said.

‘It hurt, Marcus agreed, adding that the criticism was ‘painful to listen to … but it all made sense and it stung the most because it was all things we could control and didn’t do.’

It comes after the return of MKR turned out to be a major disappointment in Monday’s metro ratings.

The premiere of the cooking competition’s 13 season managed to draw in just 470,000 viewers in the major capitals.

MKR did not even finish in the top ten most-watched programs overnight, a far cry from its ratings heyday a decade ago when it would pull in well over a million viewers an episode.

MKR returned to Channel Seven in 2022, two years after it was axed.

Debuting to just 500,000 viewers, the show has continued to shed fans in the metro centres.

Still, according to Total TV figures – which combines regional viewing numbers, catch-up TV and BVOD (broadcaster video on demand) – MKR averaged an impressive 900,000 fans an episode in 2022.
