Mysterious thick fog descends on Sydney’s Bondi Beach on a scorching and humid 28C day

Mysterious ‘ghost cloud’ descends on Bondi Beach on a humid 28C day – but there’s a simple explanation

  • A mysterious fog has descended on Sydney’s Bondi Beach, covering the stretch’s famed shoreline
  • The thick, grey clouds arrived on the shores in the city’s east by mid-morning on Monday
  • However, while the dense clouds may appear daunting it was actually a relatively balmy day across the city

A mysterious fog has descended on Sydney’s Bondi Beach, covering the stretch’s famed shoreline and leaving beachgoers alarmed.

The thick, grey clouds rolled in from the sea and blanketed the city’s east by mid-morning on Monday.

Typical clear blue skies started the day at Bondi, but the fog soon almost completely obscured the beach, forcing punters to swim and sunbathe under a grey haze.

But while the ‘ghost cloud’ may look somewhat apocalyptic, the Bureau of Meteorology assured Sydneysiders there was nothing to be afraid of.

‘While it’s not necessarily common to see fog in the afternoon, the current moist conditions over the sea are conducive to it,’ the bureau tweeted.

The lack of wind meant that the fog stayed in one piece instead of breaking up.

As the clouds continued to roll in, light gusts of wind shifted the fog between the water and the sand – at times shrouding the Surf Life Saving Club.

However, while the dense clouds appear to have Sydney’s typical summer weather on its head, it was in fact another balmy day across the city.

On Monday, when the shots were taken, a maximum of 28C was reached in the city with 25km/h winds sweeping in to hit the eastern beaches around Bondi.

And while both Tuesday and Wednesday will reach a comfortable 25C, Thursday will be another murky scorcher with a top of 32C.

However, the high level of humidity which has plagued Sydney in the last week and saw the arrival of torrential downpours across the weekend shows no sign of letting up.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the heat isn’t expected to last – with the mercury set to plummet by the end of the week.

The city will only hit a high of only 23C on Saturday, with a high of 22C on Sunday accompanied by a 70 per cent chance of rain.
