Mystery as man who tried to rob muffin cafe in Victorian town is found dead by the side of the road in Daylesford

A man who is believed to have tried to rob a muffin cafe has mysteriously been found dead on the side of a road just metres away. 

Emergency services were called after a jogger discovered the injured man on Bridport Street in Daylesford, northwest of Melbourne, after 6:30am on Tuesday.

The jogger attempted to revive the man, believed to be in his 40s or 50s, however he died at the scene.

Victorian Police said the man sustained ‘serious injuries’ and his death is being treated as suspicious.

The man is believed to have attempted to rob the nearby bakery, Muffins and More, which is just metres away from where he was found by the jogger.

The new owner of the muffin cafe had accidentally left the door unlocked while preparing food when the man is understood to have attempted to rob the store.

An employee at the cafe, Juliette Scanlan, said the new owner was ‘pretty shaken up’ by the incident.

‘Something’s happened, he’s run off … whatever has happened from there is a bit of a mystery,’ Ms Scanlan told the Herald Sun.

‘(The owner’s) still very new to the job so it’s pretty scary for getting started in this new position, I think she’ll recover, hopefully really quickly.’

Ms Scanlan said she wished the best for the man’s family with his death still shrouded in mystery.

A local resident said they had heard a disturbance outside of their home before hearing what seemed to be glass breaking.

Another local said they had heard people yelling and arguing in the area before a car ‘took off’.

Investigations into the man’s death are still ongoing as Victoria Police await the results of a post-mortem.

 ‘At this early stage the circumstances surrounding the man’s death are unclear but is being treated as suspicious,’ Victoria Police said in a statement.
