A nanny in south China has been accused of child abuse after camera footage captured her slapping and allegedly trying to suffocate a seven-month-old baby. 

The infant’s mother filed a police report in Shenzhen, Guangdong province on Wednesday after noticing red palm prints on her daughter’s swollen left cheek, according to Chinese reports.

A video that emerged following the incident shows the 36-year-old caretaker, surnamed Xiao, kneeling in front of the baby’s parents and begging for their forgiveness.

‘I am sorry. Please forgive me,’ Xiao was heard saying in the video.

She added that she lost her temper because the infant wouldn’t stop crying, according to Southern Metropolis Daily.

The girl’s mother, surnamed Li, told reporters that the nanny denied any wrongdoing when she first asked about her daughter’s injuries.

However, after filing a police report and revealing the footage as proof, she finally admitted to slapping the child.

Xiao, who had been a helper at the home for two years, insisted that she only hit the baby once and did not try to suffocate her. She was fired immediately. 

Following a police investigations, she was detained for 10 days and fined 500 yuan (£57).
