Penguin Bloom is based on the true story of Sam Bloom, a mother-of-three living in Sydney, Australia, who became paralyzed from the chest down after an accident in Thailand.

Sam and her family adopted a baby magpie and soon relied upon each other.

The family called the bird Penguin Bloom after they found Penguin injured on the ground near their Northern Beaches home.
