NASCAR’s Richard Childress opens fire on home invaders

NASCAR racing team owner Richard Childress fired his gun at intruders at his home in Reedy Creek, North Carolina.

Three men wearing masks allegedly broke into Childress’ home on Sunday at around 10.30pm, when a broken window set off the alarm.

Childress, 72, then fired at the intruders, but police say none of them seemed to be hurt as they fled the property.

Surveillance footage captured the suspected offenders.

The NASCAR racing team owner has offered a $10,000 reward to anyone who can offer any information to help catch the culprits.

Speaking after the incident, Sheriff Brice said Childress had told him: ‘The only reason he and his wife were here today was because of God and the Second Amendment’, reports CBS Sports.

The Castle Doctrine, which is in place in North Carolina, allows people to defend themselves from intruders using guns or other deadly force.

The older version of the law only included a person’s home, but this was updated in 2011 to include vehicles or places of work, and is more specific about when deadly force is appropriate.

The NASCAR legend is a member of the National Rifle Association (NRA) and has spoken out passionately in favour of guns.

He said: ‘This country was built on God and guns and I believe in it. The freedom that we have we can’t take for granted.

‘We could lose our freedoms someday and we can’t let that happen in this country,’ reports WGHP.
