Two neglected Ukrainian sisters have been rescued from a squalid ‘house of horror’ where they were so hungry they ate styrofoam and wallpaper.

Diana and Anya, aged five and one, lived in appalling conditions with their mother and her boyfriend in Dnipro.

The 25-year-old mother, who has not been named, did not feed the children properly and they ate everything they could find, doctors said.

When the officers entered the flat they were shocked to see the disgusting conditions the little sisters lived in, local media says.

A police source said: ‘It was awful. The toilet was not working at all in the flat and the family used the bathtub instead.

‘The tub was covered with a thick layer of dirt and infested with worms.

‘The girls got used to sleeping in filthy bedclothes, eat from unwashed dishes and play on the littered floor.

‘The stench in the rooms was horrific and it was difficult to breathe.’
