Middlesbrough boss Neil Warnock has spoken out about his friendship with Jose Mourinho, revealing the pair keep in touch throughout the year, as he leapt to the defence of the under-fire Tottenham coach.

Mourinho is under increasing pressure at Spurs after being dumped out of both the FA Cup and Europa League, while the team face an uphill battle to secure a place in the Champions League next season.

But while many Tottenham fans have voiced their anger about the former Chelsea manager’s tactics and poor results, veteran boss Warnock says he has ‘a lot of time’ for Mourinho – and apparently, so too does his wife Sharon.

He revealed the Portuguese boss had sent a letter to her with picture of the two managers together, captioned ‘your two favourite handsome men’.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Warnock said: ‘I had two wonderful photographs sent to me and my wife Sharon and me and Jose – She loved Jose.

‘On the letter it said “Dear Sharon, please find enclosed two photographs of your two favourite handsome men”. It was me and Jose. I thought she might have just crossed me out with a pen because he’s a good looking lad isn’t he?’

Mourinho has divided opinion in north London since taking the reins from Mauricio Pochettino in November 2019, but he has guided Spurs to the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City on April 25.

Sportsmail understands he will be sacked if the team fails to finish in the top four, with some players not buying into his defensive tactics that have coincided with a number of disappointing results this term.

His side topped the Premier League table in December but have plummeted down the standings after nine defeats.

However, Warnock feels Mourinho’s record speaks for himself and admits he can’t help but admire the 58-year-old, revealing that the pair have a good relationship and text throughout the year.

‘He might not be everybody’s cup of tea, but have a look at what he’s won,’ the former Cardiff boss added.

‘I’ve got a lot of time for him. He always texts me two or three times a year and I do the same. You just admire people like that.’

Mourinho’s men face a must-win game against Newcastle next on Sunday, before two tough fixtures against former club Manchester United and Everton.
