Netflix algorithm gives Australian viewers what they want

  • Netflix revealed the algorithm it uses to help Australian viewers select content
  • New algorithms are based on commonalities in theme, story detail or characters
  • Originally algorithms were simply based on genre, such as comedy or romance

Netflix has revealed it uses algorithms to help viewers find shows they really want to watch.

The streaming network’s multibillion-dollar annual outlay for new content poses a major challenge – matching each program with the subscribers who are likely to enjoy it.

Netflix said originally Australian viewers would pick their next show based on a genre they know and love.

But Netflix’s internet TV and recommendation algorithms are breaking down these very one-sided and linear connections between what people are watching and what to watch next.

‘Essentially, it means that viewers aren’t moving from shows like Sex and the City onto Gossip Girl, or The Shield onto The Wire,’ a Netflix spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia.

‘But instead from shows such as Grace & Frankie and Love onto Marvel’s Daredevil, or from Amanda Knox and Black Mirror onto Marvel’s Luke Cage.

‘In fact, the stats are showing that 80 per cent of Netflix viewers are discovering content through recommendations made by the algorithm.

‘It’s a really interesting shift in how we’re picking what shows to watch, and has both a lifestyle/entertainment and technology angle to the story.’
