The Crown’s Claire Foy earned less than her male co-star Matt Smith during the first two seasons of the Netflix drama, it has been revealed.
The English actress, 33, played the lead role of Queen Elizabeth while Smith, 35 played her husband, Prince Philip.
She had significantly more screen time in the biopic, which centered around the Monarch.
The Crown producers Suzanne Mackie and Andy Harries made the shocking revelation when they were asked about the stars’ pay during a panel discussion about the series at the INTV Conference in Jerusalem on Tuesday.

Shining star: Foy, 33, was awarded Best Actress in a TV Series for her work on season one of the show at the 2017 Golden Globes in January of last year
They admitted that he did make more due to his Doctor Who fame, according to Variety. (He starred in the popular BBC series from 2010 to 2014.)
They didn’t explain why Foy continued to earn less than Smith in the second season, after she eclipsed his fame with her award-winning performance.
However the Producers did tell Variety this will change as creative director Suzanne Mackie said: ‘Going forward, no one gets paid more than the Queen.’
She earned a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actor’s Guild Awards for best actress following the first season. She received nominations at the BAFTA and Primetime Emmy Awards.
Eyes on the prize: She was also recognized by her fellow actors in the Best Female Actor in a Drama series at the Screen Actors Guild Awards last year for the first season
For the second season of the highly-popular program Foy earned another SAG Award for outstanding actress and earned another nomination for the Golden Globes.
English actor Smith also earned numerous award nominations for his portrayal, but has not yet won a major gong for his efforts.
Despite the accolades and acclaim for Foy, he kept his higher salary in season two.
The producers insisted the pay discrepancy would be changed for future seasons – however, that will be of little consolation to Foy, who will no longer star in the show.
‘No one should have been paid more than her’: Fans took to social media to share their outrage
‘Going forward, no one gets paid more than the Queen,’ said Mackie.
Foy made $40,000 per episode, Variety revealed last year. It is not yet known how much Smith was paid.
Fans took to social media to share outrage over the pay discrepancy.
One social media user wrote: ‘If someone is playing the title character they should be earning the most no matter what gender.’
Working relationship: Foy made $40,000 per episode, Variety revealed last year. It is not yet known how much Smith was paid, as they are pictured together at a premiere back in November
Former National Economy Adviser to US Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama Gene Sperling even chimed in saying the show was high-quality television.
The Atlantic contributor wrote: ‘Every fan knows Claire Foy was THE stand out performer that made it shine. Her portrayal as the young Queen Elizabeth is a very top tour-de-force acting performance. No one should have been paid more than her.’
The cast will change for season three of The Crown to allow for the fact the royals are getting older.
Olivia Colman will play the Queen, while the role of Philip has not yet been announced.
Where does Netflix’s The Crown go from here?
Watch the throne: Olivia Colman (pictured in November) will be taking over the role of Queen Elizabeth II for season three of The Crown
The Crown will move forward without stars Claire Foy and Matt Smith for season three.
Veteran actress Olivia Colman will be portraying Queen Elizabeth II as it will be covering the two terms of Harold Wilson as the Queen’s Prime Minister.
The first began in 1964 as the end of his second came in 1976.
In January, Netflix announced the series will be returning.
Filming for season three will begin in July.
It will also touch on Princess Margaret’s five-year affair with baronet and gardening expert Roddy Llewellyn which eventually leads to her divorcing Antony Armstrong-Jones in 1978.
No doubt the most exciting part to viewers will be the introduction of Camilla Parker Bowles and the eventual Diana, Princess of Wales.
Executive producer of the series Suzanne Mackie told Deadline that in episodes from later seasons, Queen Elizabeth’s son Prince Charles ‘grows up and meets Diana. Those are going to be extraordinary.’
Original plans were for the series to do six seasons but the executive producers told the publication that the ‘natural end ‘would be when the crown passes.’
Queen Elizabeth II is currently 91 years old.
If the series continues through the contemporary time, no doubt Prince Harry’s soon-to-be bride Meghan Markle will fit into the story.
As the 36-year-old is an actress – who starred in USA drama Suits – Producer Mackie joked to Deadline: ‘she could play herself.’
Foy is yet to address the bombshell revelation.
Last year Variety revealed the salaries as several big name television actresses as she earned the same amount as Foy was in the bottom tier along with Chrissy Metz as they both earned $40K an episode. However This Is Us had 18 episodes while The Crown only had 10.
Her salary was eclipsed by Elisabeth Moss who made $200K an episode for The Handmaid’s Tale as well as Game Of Thrones’ five main castmembers (Emilia Clarke, Lena Headey, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Peter Dinklage, and Kit Harington) who made $500K per episode.

The talented actress’ star is still rising as she is set to star alongside Ryan Gosling in Damien Chazelle’s Neil Armstrong biopic First Man and Steven Soderbergh thriller Unsane which are both set for release later this year.
Smith has four film projects coming up including Charles Manson biopic Charlie Says in which he will be playing the notorious serial killer.
No doubt this news comes at an interesting time as Foy announced her separation from husband Stephen Campbell Moore last month.
They have a two-year-old daughter together named Ivy Rose.

Their relationship goes back seven years as they tied the knot in 2014. They began dating after meeting on set of 2011 film Season Of The Witch.
Netflix has renewed the series for a third and fourth season back in January.
It will be moving forward without Foy and Smith as it will move forward into the Camilla Parker Bowles years and will even introduce a young Princess Diana.
