New $15billion Melbourne train will allow travellers to reach airport from the city in 20 minutes

A new $15billion Melbourne rail link will cut the commute time from the city to the airport to just 20 minutes.

The AirRail plan will increase the frequency of trains from the city to Melbourne Airport, every ten minutes during peak times, and will cut trips short to 20 minutes.

Tickets will cost customers $20 but one-way tickets will cost less.

The station where the high-speed trains will stop once passengers arrive at the airport, will be located underground, allowing people to walk to their terminals with ease

However, the construction of the tracks will not clash with suburban services, The Herald Sun reported.

A private consortium is planning to invest $5billion on the rail link project and aims to begin the construction in 2020.

The train models, unique from Melbourne’s Metro Trains, will run on a 24 hour basis, located at a new home base in Sunshine.

A total of 27kilometres of train tracks will be built in between the city and Melbourne airport.

The tracks will run through twin tunnels in West Melbourne via the Sunshine route.

Sunshine would become a central place for commuters to travel to nearby cities including Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo
