New addition to Canterbury-Bankstown playground divides parents

Bewildering new addition to a popular children’s playground divides opinion: ‘What’s the point?’

  • Parent shared pic on Reddit asking what they’re used for, sparking online debate
  • Many believe the logs would encourage creative play but others disagreed

A photo of a controversial new addition to a popular children’s playground has divided the internet.

Mystery surrounds the recent installation of three wooden logs of different lengths at a park in the Canterbury-Bankstown area in Sydney’s south-west metres away from nearby homes.

The logs have gone viral online and attracted hundreds of comments after a parent took to Reddit for clarification about their purpose.

The post sparked online debate over whether they were a danger while others argued the logs were installed to encourage children to use their imagination.

‘What is it for? And is it a good swap for swings? The redesign of the playground is now complete so it’s not something half done,’ the parent captioned the photo.

Many Reddit users welcomed the logs and believed they were installed to encourage creative play.

These logs (pictured) have mysteriously appeared in a children’s playground in Sydney’s south-west and have since divided the internet

‘Kids can hit them, climb them, hide behind them, run around them, whatever. Doesn’t matter,’ one commented.

Another added: ‘That’s pretty good. I remember as a kid sometimes you just wanted a solid post or a wall you could throw balls at, use as a cricket stump etc.’

But others disagreed and thought the logs were a waste of ratepayers’ money and ‘poor play value’.

‘When I was a kid I didn’t know anyone who played with these kinds of things, they just sat in the corner rotting,’ one explained.

‘Creative play requires a little more than a couple vertical sticks – can’t play pole tag, can’t hide behind them, can’t hang things from them.

‘Some well curated rocks or spacing and the inclusion of horizontal bars would open up much more interesting opportunities,’ one person wrote.

Another added: ‘Whoever takes this philosophy shouldn’t be designing public utilities. There is a zero per cent chance kids 0-10 will enjoy posts in the ground like this.’

A third wrote: ‘What’s the point of a playground if it doesn’t have play equipment? That’s just a park.

One Reddit user wondered if they could be totem poles for Aboriginal art while another suggested it could be Parkour for young children.

Some saw the funny side.

‘The Urban Design team was at loggerheads with Finance,’ one quipped.

‘Once sharpened, they’ll do an excellent job of impaling heretics alive,’ read one comment.

‘Definitely pee attractors,’ shared another.

‘The council either had too many logs or not enough logs,’ wrote another user.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Canterbury Bankstown Council for more details.
