Whether it’s Bake Off or MasterChef, we’ve all at times wished we could sample the culinary delights served up on TV.

And that may not be far off – after experts created a device enabling ‘remote tasting’.

Researchers have developed an ‘e-Taste’ system that uses sensors to ‘capture’ how something tastes via electrical signals.

The data is then passed to a remote gadget that replicates flavours by passing chemicals to the mouth emulating salty, sour, sweet, bitter, or umami notes – or a mix.

The device rests on the lower teeth and releases the chemicals via gels to match stimuli, which could be food or drink thousands of miles away.

In tests, 16 people confirmed that the system could emulate flavours at a base level, vary taste intensities and produce different combinations.

Participants could also identify whether the taste provided was lemonade, cake, fried egg, fish soup or coffee.

Writing in the journal Science Advances, the Ohio State University team said potential applications included ‘immersive gaming, online shopping, remote education, weight management and sensory testing’ – and could even help people with brain injuries.
