New ‘person of interest’ in the murder of bikie boss Mick Hawi

Bikie Mick Hawi may have tried to extort $300,000 from a wealthy property developer before he was gunned down in broad daylight.

Police are investigating if Hawi’s links to the Sydney businessman may be connected to his murder, but the ‘person of interest’ has denied any involvement.

The 37-year-old’s life was violently ended on February 15 when he was shot multiple times by a masked assassin outside the Fitness First gym in Rockdale.

The gunman then fled in a grey Mercedes station wagon which was later found nearby.

Hawi was a man who lived by the bikie code and ‘never snitched’, according to his followers.

Police sources told The Saturday Telegraph the businessman is a ‘person of interest in the case’ and are investigating if Hawi’s death was related to the alleged debts.

They are looking into a theory that the businessman may have sought out help to settle the alleged debts before Lone Wolf bikie gang members carried out the shooting.

The man told the publication on Friday he had ‘absolutely nothing’ to do with Hawi’s murder and does not ‘know anything’.

‘I’m sorry but I don’t know anything, I’ve got no involvement. I’ve got nothing to say,’ he said.

Born in Beirut, Lebanon, Hawi moved to Australia with his parents, brother and three sisters as a young boy in 1985.

He then rose through the ranks of the Comanchero outlaw motorcycle gang, eventually becoming national president.

In April, police revealed the car found burning after the fatal shooting of Hawi was stolen nine months before he was gunned down in February.

A forensic examination found that the car had been stolen during a carjacking in May 2017.

The owner was approached after parking in Fairfield and threatened with a knife.

‘We know high-performance vehicles are often stolen for immediate use by criminal groups, but they can also be stored for sale at a later date,’ Detective Chief Inspector Steve Patton said.

‘It is likely the vehicle would have changed hands – possibly multiple times – so we’d like to hear from anyone who may have seen the vehicle during that time, whether in a carpark, secure building, or even at a storage facility.’
