The six siblings were found when the eldest son, Jan Zon van Dorsten, 25, escaped and raised the alarm at a bar in nearby Ruinerwold.

He drank five beers before telling the owner he couldn’t go home.

That led officers to the remote homestead where they found Jan’s four brothers and sisters, aged between 18 and 25, along with their father. The family has been taken to a safe location while a seventh person – Austrian Josef B, 58 – has been arrested.

Investigators admit they are deeply puzzled by the case and are still working to answer key questions – such as whether the family were held against their will, and what exactly their relationship was with Josef B.

The mystery is deepened further by the fact that Jan, the eldest son, had access to social media and had been active on Facebook since June this year.

Gerrit Jan van Dorsten is accused of forcing his kids to remain in cells in his house while waiting for the end of the world.

However, he managed to stay in contact with the outside world and published videos on Facebook throughout his reign of terror.

Posting under pseudonym John Eagles, van Dorsten showed himself exercising outside the farmhouse and discussing whether Nasa would build farms on Mars.

Officers said they are probing ‘whether a certain religion or philosophy’ played a role in the detention, as it was confirmed the father was a member of the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification – known as the Moonies – in the 1980s.

It is believed he met Josef Brunner there – a groundskeeper at the farm and the family’s former neighbour who was also arrested last week on suspicion of the same charges as van Dorsten.
