Thousands hit the streets of Sydney on Sunday for a night of festivities as 2017 came to a close.
But not many made it home, with couples and singles alike choosing to rest up on a comfortable section of pavement instead.
One man was seen trying to convince his female partner an outdoor nap would be a wise choice as he laid on the footpath and she sat above him on a plastic barrier.
Eventually, in a move of gallantry, he held out his hand and brought her to the floor, acting as a human mattress to shield her from the hard concrete.

Gallantly, he even served as a padding between his female partner and the hard cement of the footpath
The man appeared delighted his companion had conceded to his idea of where the couple should spend the first morning of 2018
The pair had likely not anticipated such alfresco sleeping conditions. Earlier, they had been riding a bike together, likely looking for somewhere more padded, before losing balance and appearing to decide to make do.
Their cycling efforts had been valiant and they both seemed delighted as the man steered with his date for the night on the back of the bicycle.
However, the plastic bollard which later served as a seat proved to be their undoing, with pictures showing the man appearing to be tangled in the rented bike moments later.
Earlier, the pair had been on a quest for a softer place to sleep, seen riding a rental bike through Sydney. The pair squeezed on to the one bicycle to ensure they were not separated in the chaos
Unfortunately, balance is harder with two people on such a thin metal frame, and the pair crashed into a plastic barrier. The man appeared to be stuck between the bike as his companion helped him up
The couple were not the only ones who found comfort in the pavement in the early hours of 2018.

One appeared to be in better spirits than the other, who was seen looking displeased towards a bag of chips.
A separate group of women were more drawn to a concrete barrier, where they sat deep in conversation with a male friend.
The trio looked worse for wear as night turned to day, with one member of the group appearing to be off balance.
In front of them, memories of the crowds from the night before lingered in the form of an overflowing garbage bin, which had spilled out on to the path around it.

While many took the easy option of sleeping off their sorrows on the street, others bravely carried on trying to get home.
Perhaps needing the extra support, friends and partners joined hands for the arduous journey ahead of them.

Things can surely only improve for some of the partygoers who packed into Sydney harbour, with boozy behaviour and even broken legs marring their New Year’s Eve.
A long day of festivities appeared to take a toll on some as police made arrests in the CBD even before the fireworks display lit up the sky at midnight.
