New Year’s Eve temperatures set to be hottest since 1985

Brace for the hottest New Year in decades: Extreme heatwave will send temperatures soaring – before it hits FORTY-SEVEN degrees in Sydney

  • Sydney is set to experience record temperatures of up to 44C on New Year’s Eve
  • Penrith will be the hottest suburb, while the city will hit 33C – highest since 1985
  • Melbourne will swelter on Monday, before a cool change sees temperature drop
  • The city will get nowhere near the New Year’s Eve record of 42.9C back in 2005

Sydney will sweat in 2020, with record New Year’s Eve temperatures expected across the city.

The city centre is predicted to hit 33C on Tuesday, while Penrith and the surrounding western suburbs are likely to reach 44C.

It will be a particularly long day for those planning to camp out to catch a glimpse of the famous fireworks, with more than two million set to cram into the city.

Weatherzone meteorologist Sam Brown told Daily Mail Australia it will be the hottest New Year’s Eve in Sydney since 1985.

‘Sydney will really be feeling the heat this New Year’s Eve,’ Mr Brown said.

‘The forecast is for 33C and that would be the highest temperature on December 31 since 1985 when it reached 34C.’

While Sydney is set to swelter during the day, the temperature will drop dramatically by the time fireworks light up the sky at midnight.

A southerly change sweeping up from Victoria is expected to hit between 7pm and 9pm, sending the temperature falling ahead of a cooler New Year’s Day.

‘We’re going to see a 10-12 degree drop tomorrow evening, with clouds developing late tomorrow night,’ Mr Brown said.

That change will hit Sydney almost exactly 24 hours after sending temperatures in Melbourne plummeting.

Victoria’s capital will reach 43C on Monday, before dropping to a predicted top of just 21C on Tuesday.

‘Melbourne will be the hottest today before the change comes through and that will see it some 20C less tomorrow,’ Mr Brown said.

‘That cool southerly change will hit between about 5pm and 8pm, with a chance of some slight showers late tonight and early tomorrow morning.’

The cooler temperatures will stick around for New Year’s Day, with a 25C maximum forecast.

But the mercury will soar again on Friday with a forecast of 34C, before reaching up to 38C on Saturday.

Temperatures will remain steady in Brisbane across New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, with highs of 30C and 32C respectively.
