New York medic killed in hit-and-run riding motorbike

An off-duty New York medic was killed in a hit-and-run while riding his motorcycle across a bridge.

Kevin Liang, 27, was changing lanes on the new Kosciuszko Bridge when he was struck by a vehicle around 6.50pm on Saturday, reports the New York Daily News.

Liang was a member of the New York City Fire Department Emergency Medical Service. 

He lost control of his motorcycle upon the collision and fell off of it. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died.

A witness said the driver of the vehicle, which has been described variously as a dark sedan and a black Lexus, got out of their car and surveyed the scene before driving away. Liang was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. Pictured is a scene from the crash site

It is not clear whether the vehicle’s driver, who has not been found, knew they had hit the motorcycle. Early reports suggest the car was a dark sedan, reports ABC 7.

A witness told the Daily News that the driver did stop to check the damage to their vehicle and to assess the crash scene, before getting back into their car and leaving the scene.

The witness also said that the car was a black Lexus.

In a statement, the FDNY said: ‘We are deeply saddened by this loss. Kevin Liang was loved by his family, his colleagues and close partners of FDNY Emergency Medical Dispatch Bureau.’

The new Kosciuszko Bridge connecting Greenpoint, Brooklyn and Maspeth, Queens was opened in April 2017.

The old Kosciuszko Bridge connecting the two neighborhoods was demolished at 8am on Sunday in a controlled explosion to make way for the expansion of a new bridge over Newtown Creek.
