  • The dogs were found in a rubbish bin after ‘freezing to death’ during the night
  • Investigators are desperate to find the dogs’ mother as she will be traumatised

Animal rescue groups have made a desperate plea for information after a rubbish bag with eight dead puppies was found dumped in a park.

The New Zealand SPCA took to Facebook to issue a plea after the Bull Mastiff cross puppies were found next to the playground at Mona Square in Ashburton.

The dogs weighed between 600g and 1.2kg when they died, and had been fed by their mother and were otherwise healthy.

Royal New Zealand Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) Christchurch took to Facebook to issue a plea after the Bull Mastiff cross puppies were found next to the playground at Mona Square in Ashburton

The SPCA said they are unclear on how the dogs died on Monday night but there is a possibility they froze to death due to the low temperatures.

Investigators are desperate to find the dogs’ mother as she ‘will be traumatised and is at risk of developing mastitis’.

‘Our centre is shaken today. We are both heartbroken and angry,’ said Ashburton Centre Manager Rebecca Dobson.

‘My message to the owner of these puppies is: we would have helped you. Our doors are always open for vulnerable animals.’

This is the second case of an animal being dumped in a bin in the area in the last month.

The SPCA urged the public to come to them for help.

Anyone with information has been asked to come forward.
