New Zealand motorists are being slugged over $3 a litre at petrol stations

  • Motorists in some parts of New Zealand paying over $3 a litre for 91-octane fuel
  • Experts also warned Australian prices at the pump could surge in coming weeks
  • Both Brent oil futures and Singapore oil prices have jumped in recent months

As petrol prices soar to a four-year-high in parts of Australia, fed-up motorists in New Zealand are being forced to pay over $3 a litre to fill their tanks.

One man snapped a photo of 91-octane fuel selling for a staggering $3.11 a litre on the Great Barrier Island, off the coast of Auckland, this week.

His photo sparked other furious motorists in New Zealand to compare petrol prices, with another claiming fuel was for sale on the Chatham Island for $3.05 a litre.

Senior Economist at Commsec, Ryan Felsman, warns that a surge to above $80 a barrel in Singapore gasoline prices could see prices at Aussie pumps jump in the near future.

‘Pump prices are above $1.40 across large swathes of the country and likely to stay there,’ Mr Felsman told Business Insider.

Brent oil futures prices, which are used to determine petrol pricing, also jumped to above $80 last week, the first time since 2014.

The exorbitant petrol prices in New Zealand come amidst warnings for Australian motorists to ‘fill up now’ before prices hit a four-year high.

Sydney and Brisbane drivers are encouraged to get to their nearest station after unleaded prices peaked above 161.4 cent per litre last week.

While some retailers are still selling their fuel for less than 140 cents per litre, the low prices are expected to soar.
