Newcastle fans taunt Arsenal after Gunners’ defeat left Tottenham in pole position for European spot

Newcastle supporters have mocked their Arsenal counterparts after inflicting a loss which hugely damages their Champions League hopes.

The Magpies beat Mikel Arteta’s side 2-0 at St James’ Park on Monday evening, dealing their opponents a huge blow.

The result leaves Arsenal two points behind fierce rivals Tottenham in the top-four race, with just one game left this season.

In order to secure fourth position and the final Champions League qualifying spot, the Gunners essentially need to beat Everton and hope Spurs slip up against already-relegated Norwich.

And knowing a win over the north London side would hurt their ambitions of European football, Newcastle fans taunted them with a funny chant during the game. 

They sung: ‘Champions League? You’re having a laugh!… Champions League? You’re having a laugh!’ on repeat, with much of the home stand echoing the song.

Although several players were missing for Arsenal, including left back Kieran Tierney and central midfielder Thomas Partey, it was a weak and shoddy performance.

Ben White’s own goal and Bruno Guimaraes’ late strike were the difference between the sides, but Newcastle were all over the visitors and could have scored more.

Eddie Howe’s side now lie in 12th, and could potentially finish as high as ninth in the league if results go their way on the final day.

It has been a big turnaround since Howe took over on November 8, when the side were 19th in the division, the only side in the league without a win and level on points with bottom side Norwich.
