Newcastle loses to Nottingham Forest in League Cup

LONDON (AP) – Newcastle’s poor start to the season only got worse on Wednesday as the Premier League team conceded two late goals in a 3-1 loss to second-division club Nottingham Forest in the English League Cup.

Newcastle had leveled the game at 1-1 in injury time through Salomon Rondon, only for Matty Cash and Gil Dias to score in the final minutes for the host.

Newcastle appealed for a penalty at 2-1 for goalkeeper Luke Steele’s challenge on Ayoze Perez.

Daryl Murphy had put Forest ahead in the second minute against his former club. Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez made seven changes to the side which lost 2-1 to Chelsea on Sunday but his team slipped to a third defeat in four matches this season, with Premier League champion Manchester City up next on Saturday.

Everton had no problems in advancing as Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored twice after Gylfi Sigurdsson had put the team ahead in a 3-1 victory over Rotherham.

Watford also beat a Championship side, securing a 2-0 win over Reading despite manager Javi Gracia resting all 11 players from Sunday’s 2-1 Premier League win over Crystal Palace.

Isaac Success opened the scoring for Watford from close range eight minutes before the break, his first goal since October 2016. Debutant Domingos Quina extended the visitors’ lead 17 minutes into the second half as the Hornets maintained a perfect start to the season.

Also, Milwall came from behind twice to beat League One side Plymouth 3-2, with substitute Aiden O’Brien scoring the winner from 35 yards with a minute remaining.
