Steve Bruce says only his Newcastle players can answer the question as to whether he has lost the dressing-room.

The head coach believes he retains their support but admits he does not know what they are truly thinking.

‘I’m the wrong one to ask,’ he said. ‘I saw nothing wrong with them at Arsenal (2-0 FA Cup defeat) and Liverpool at home (0-0 draw).

‘So you’ll have to ask them, and do your rounds on them. I still believe, yes, but we can’t accept that performance the other night (1-0 defeat at Sheffield United). It’s that hand grenade we throw in that bitterly disappoints me.

‘When we’re expected to win we don’t handle it very well at all. That’s where we are. That’s why the roof caves in.

‘I have to take the responsibility for that and ask the question: why have we done so well against Arsenal? Why have we done so well against Liverpool?’

They return to Arsenal in the Premier League this evening on the back of the manager calling their display at Sheffield United ‘absolute s***e’.

And he said: ‘We have to offer more going forward. The other night we didn’t do the basics well enough. Forget about tactics and formations, we didn’t do the basics well enough to win a match.’
