Newcastle rebuffed by Manchester United in their move to sign Jesse Lingard on loan

Newcastle rebuffed in move to sign Jesse Lingard on loan with Manchester United wary of weakening their squad amid Covid threat – but Magpies could make a breakthrough if they offer a sizeable fee to land the 29-year-old for rest of the season

  • Jesse Lingard’s Manchester United contract is up at the end of the season
  • The 29-year-old is wanted by Newcastle in their bid to avoid relegation
  • But United are happy to hang on to him as a squad player for their campaign

Newcastle want to sign Jesse Lingard on loan but face resistance from Manchester United.

Sportsmail understands an initial approach has been rebuffed and United would prefer to keep the 29-year-old as a squad player for the remainder of the season, despite his contract expiring in the summer.

Lingard is likely to favour a loan deal as opposed to a permanent transfer, enabling him to keep his options open. And were Newcastle to return with a sizeable loan fee then there could be movement on the deal.

However, sources say United are reluctant to lose any players amid the threat of Covid-19 depleting numbers.

They are also mindful of Lingard performing well for a Premier League rival, as he did last season when scoring nine times for West Ham from January onwards.

In that regard, Newcastle’s position in the bottom three may make United more willing to do business. West Ham retain an interest in the England forward, as do Tottenham and clubs in Spain and Italy.

But Newcastle are becoming desperate for reinforcements having won just once all season. They would be willing to cover Lingard’s full salary and offer first-team football in a World Cup year.

Meanwhile, Eddie Howe’s squad are still planning to fly to Saudi Arabia following this weekend’s trip to Leeds.

The warm-weather training camp is awaiting final sign-off but players and staff have been sorting visas for the mid-season break in Jeddah.
