Newcastle sign Chelsea’s academy player of the season Lewis Hall on a £7m loan – with £28m permanent deal to follow next summer

Newcastle have completed the loan signing of Chelsea defender Lewis Hall for the rest of the season, the club have confirmed.

The young full back, regarded as one of the Premier League’s most promising talents, is likely to join permanently at the end of the campaign with the deal including an obligation to buy depending on performance-related criteria.

The fee, as reported by Mail Sport, will be £28million plus add-ons.

Hall is Newcastle’s fifth signing of the summer and has been handed the No 20 shirt.

He made 12 senior appearances at Stamford Bridge, including two starts against Newcastle last season, but was allowed to move on in search of more game time.

‘I’m very proud. Me and my family are Newcastle fans, and for me and my brother growing up, it was drilled into us that we were Newcastle,’ Hall said.

‘It’s a big club and I can’t wait to get started.

‘I got a lot of experience last year in some big fixtures and I was really proud of the way I progressed as a player and a person. To now be here at Newcastle, the club that I’ve supported since I was a kid, I’m honoured and very proud to wear this shirt.

‘It’s very exciting. When you look back on last season and the way the team performed – not just the results, but the performances the team were putting in – it was amazing.

‘There’s so many talented players and we’ve got the Champions League now as well so there’s many different competitions that I know the team will be wanting to do well in, and hopefully get a trophy or two as well.’

Hall arrived at Newcastle’s training ground last Friday to undergo his medical, with boss Eddie Howe confirming his interest in the youngster at his press conference.

Howe also confirmed Hall would conclude the club’s business in this window.

Mail Sport reported that Newcastle were in talks with Chelsea over the left back, who is expected to join on a permanent basis for a minimum fee of £28m.

Newcastle leapfrogged top-flight rivals Crystal Palace in the race for the 18-year-old and talks advanced quickly, while the deferred payment will crucially allow the former to comply with Financial Fair Play restrictions this summer.

Hall faced stern competition from Ben Chilwell, Marc Cucurella and Ian Maatsen in west London and Chelsea respected his wish to leave.
