Horror as woman, 20 is allegedly raped at knifepoint by a stranger who broke into her bedroom in the middle of the day

A man who allegedly raped a woman at knifepoint in her bedroom in broad daylight has been refused bail.

Jonah Somasundaram, 20, appeared Newcastle Local Court via video link on Saturday after being arrested at a home in North Lambton just after 4pm on Friday.

Police allege he broke into a home in the same suburb at 3.20pm on Thursday while armed with a knife and threatened a woman, 20, in her bedroom.

The woman yelled to try and alert neighbours of the intruder but the man allegedly grabbed and sexually assaulted her. 

The alleged victim then told her housemates who called police. 

A crime scene was established and police launched Strike Force Oorin to investigate, receiving assistance from the State Crime Command’s Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad.

After his arrest Somasundaram was charged with four counts of aggravated sex assault-threat to inflict actual bodily harm victim with a weapon, break and enter, robbery armed with an offensive weapon, sexually touching another person without consent and reckless wounding.

He was denied bail and will reappear again in court on August 2, The Newcastle News reported.
