NFL draft hopeful Derrius Guice ‘asked if he likes men’

NFL Draft hopefuls are often asked jarring personal questions during the combine, which is something LSU running back Derrius Guice learned in Indianapolis last week. Not only was he asked if he was a homosexual, but another question was premised on the presumably false assumption that Guice’s mother worked as a prostitute.

‘It was pretty crazy,’ Guice told SiriusXM NFL on Wednesday, as reported by USA Today. ‘Some people are really trying to get in your head and test your reaction.

‘I go in one room, and a team will ask me “do I like men,” just to see my reaction,’ he continued. ‘I go in another room, they’ll try to bring up one of my family members or something and tell me, “Hey, I heard your mom sells herself. How do you feel about that?”‘

Pro Football Talk would later confirm that Guice was asked if he liked men.

The 20-year-old Baton Rouge native did not disclose which teams asked him those questions, but their revelation does not come as a surprise.

Guice is expected to be a first-round pick after rushing for over 1,000 yards in both his sophomore and junior seasons.

The NFL has investigated similar circumstances previously, and in 2016 issued a statement condemning ‘disappointing and clearly inappropriate’ questions from one Atlanta Falcons assistant coach to Ohio State cornerback Eli Apple.

Marquand Manuel allegedly asked Apple, who was ultimately drafted by the Giants, if he was gay. He later apologized and Falcons coach Dan Quinn publicly stated that the team took measures to make sure the incident wouldn’t be repeated.

Three prospects accused teams of similar questions in 2013, according to ESPN.com, and former Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant was asked in 2010 if his mother was a prostitute by then-Miami Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland.

Ireland later apologized and Bryant went on to play for the Dallas Cowboys.

The NFL Draft will begin in Arlington, Texas on April 26 and last through April 28.
