‘I will f*** them up’: Baker Mayfield stokes the fire ahead of revenge game vs. Cleveland before debut with Carolina in Week 1 of the NFL season
- Baker Mayfield is said to be fired up to face his former team Cleveland in Week 1
- The former No. 1 overall pick will make his debut for Carolina on September 11
- Mayfield played four seasons with the Browns before being traded this offseason
- Jacoby Brissett will start at QB for Cleveland with Deshaun Watson suspended
Baker Mayfield has allegedly promised to inflict plenty of pain on the Cleveland Browns when they travel to Carolina for Week 1 of the NFL season, insisting he ‘will f*** them up’ in a discussion with a journalist.
The Oklahoma product has remained relatively tight-lipped about the prospect of facing his former team but gave NFL’s Networks Cynthia Frelund an insight into how he’s truly feeling.
‘On the field, after the game against the Bills preseason Game 3 and I walked over to him and told him, “I’m so excited to see you… go kick some butt, especially Week 1, I cannot wait,”‘ Frelund said on Around the NFL podcast, Monday.
‘He uses some expletives and I was like, “I just hope you’re just ready,” and he was like, “I’m gonna bleep them up.”‘
Baker Mayfield threw two touchdowns as the Panthers defeated Buffalo 21-0 last Friday night
Frelund later clarified the quarterback had said ‘I’m going to f*** them up,’ elucidating that she did not want to curse on-air.
Last week, Mayfield beat out former starter and ex-Jets quarterback, Sam Darnold for the starting signal-caller position.
Panthers’ head coach Matt Rhule recently explained why he made Mayfield the starter following the franchise-changing decision.
‘When we started the process, we said we were looking at three things,’ Rhule said last Monday.
Mayfield spent four seasons in Cleveland and came within a whisker of the Super Bowl in 2021
‘No. 1, mastery of the offense; No. 2, situational football excellence; and No. 3, moving the ball and getting guys involved.
‘Baker has made a lot of improvement, a lot of growth in all three areas in a short amount of time.’
Mayfield played four seasons with the Browns, with his last being his least effective. The former Sooner threw for 3,010 yards, 17 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in while batting a shoulder injury.
Carolina and Cleveland face off September 11 at Bank of America Stadium with Browns quarterback Jacoby Brissett already named the starter following Deshaun Watson’s 11-game suspension.
It isn’t the first time Mayfield has had to prove himself after walking-on at Oklahoma in 2015
