NFL stars suffer huge head hits in the same game and are stretchered off

NFL stars Avonte Maddox and Jamaal Williams suffer huge head hits in the same game and are stretchered off strapped to backboards as concerned Packers and Eagles players watch on

  • Wisconsin side runningback Williams lay motionless after suffering a late charge
  • Philadelphia cornerback Avonte Maddox later smacked heads with a teammate
  • Maddox has been taken to hospital as a precaution, no update on Williams so far

Last night’s Eagles vs Packers clash was rocked by nasty helmet-on-helmet collisions which saw two NFL stars stretchered off the field.

High-octane levels of contact dominated the match in Wisconsin from the opening when Greenbay star Jamaal Williams suffered a bruising late charge in the first quarter.

Worried spectators clasped their hands over their mouths as the runningback lay motionless on the grass while medics sprinted over.

This was followed by an equally brutal collision in the fourth when Philadelphia cornerback Avonte Maddox was brought down after smacking heads with a teammate.

Philadelphia Eagles staff reassured concerned fans last night, tweeting that Maddox has ‘movement in all extremities’ and has been taken to hospital as a precaution.

No update on Williams’s condition has yet been received.

The 24-year-old had been passed the ball in the Packers’ first play of the match when he was swarmed by Eagles defenders.

But suddenly defensive end Derek Barnett clattered into Williams in a helmet-on helmet hit.

The Wisconsin man’s body appeared to clam up and he rocked forward on to the grass where he sprawled motionless.

Barnett was reprimanded for unnecessary charging his opponent, but was not sent off.

The savage tackle infuriated NFL fans, with many venting their concern for players welfare on social media.

In a post which has been shared thousands of times, Abdul Menon tweeted: ‘Derek Barnett needs to suspended immediately for this vicious, dirty, and UNNECESSARY hit. Sending a prayer to Jamaal Williams.’

Yet the bruising hits persisted and in the fourth saw Maddox carted off the field on a backboard.

Eagles safety Andrew Sendejo had flew up off the line to tackle a Packers runner, but missed his target and instead wiped out his own man.

Maddox was knocked off his feet and lay limp while medics treated him.

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson led the show of support to the injured Eagles player, tweeting: ‘Praying for Avonte Maddox.’

Eagles won the match on Packers turf 34-27.
