The NFL held a moment of silence in honor of Queen Elizabeth II prior to Thursday’s season opener between the Buffalo Bills and Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium.
‘Today the world lost a beloved global figure with the passing of Queen Elizabeth II,’ said SoFi Stadium’s PA announcer. ‘At this time, please join in a moment of silence in the memory of Queen Elizabeth, whose message of unity and peace inspired people throughout the world for generations.’
The 96-year-old Queen, Britain’s longest-reigning monarch and a symbol of stability in a turbulent era that saw the decline of the British empire and embarrassing dysfunction in her own family, died Thursday after 70 years on the throne.

In response to Thursday’s tragedy, the NFL’s UK-facing Twitter account released a statement.
‘Everyone at NFL UK is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Her Majesty The Queen, Elizabeth II,’ read the Tweet. ‘Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with The Royal Family. We join all those mourning the loss of Her Majesty.’
The palace announced she died at Balmoral Castle, her summer residence in Scotland, where members of the royal family had rushed to her side after her health took a turn for the worse.
A link to the almost-vanished generation that fought World War II, she was the only monarch most Britons have ever known.
Her 73-year-old son Prince Charles automatically became king and will be known as King Charles III, his office announced. British monarchs in the past have selected new names upon taking the throne. Charles’ second wife, Camilla, will be known as the Queen Consort.
