Controversial tennis star Nick Kyrgios has been dubbed ‘Houdini’ after performing an incredible point winning shot during his match at the Washington Open.

The crowd was blown away after Kyrgios, 24, managed to beat his opponent Norbert Gombos, 28, on Saturday after a back and forth rally that ended with Kyrgios diving across the court.

Ranked 48 in the world, Kyrgios took the win against his Slovakian opponent 6-3 6-3 securing his spot in the semi finals.

Kyrgios’ show stopping performance came after an intense rally, with Gombos putting him through his paces.

The Aussie star was desperately sliding across the court as he tried to keep up with continuous balls fired at him by his opponent.

In a quick shot to give Gombos the point, he fired the ball at a diving Kyrgios who managed to deflect the ball over the net.

Gombos was left shattered after the move, falling to his knees while a celebrating Kyrgios was nicknamed ‘Houdini’ by commentators.

The Australian star previously caused a stir at the tournament after throwing his drink bottle at the umpire’s chair in a fit of rage.

Kyrgios was quick to defend himself saying the bottle had slipped from his hand.

On several other occasions the player came under fire after a series of unsportsmanlike behaviour including kicking over chairs, swearing at umpires and tanking.

The final four of the ATP tournament will see Kyrgios up against recent doubles partner Stefanos Tsitsipas, after the number one seed defeated Benoit Paire 7-5 6-0.
