Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope has spoken of the madness after Toon fans hijacked an online poll which saw the England man trending number one in the UK on Twitter.

It was all down to Newcastle fan account Toon Polls who answered an online poll  from Burger King asking ‘what’s better’ between gherkins and tomatoes.

The account jokingly replied to the tweet ‘Nick Pope’ and so set off a viral trend that saw the likes of McDonalds, Easyjet and Amazon all tweeting the name of the Magpie’s summer signing.

Speaking in an interview with Sky Sports, the 30-year-old explained how he found out about the bizarre situation and how his phone blew-up with notifications.

Nick Pope has laughed off the craziness of seeing his name trend number one on Twitter

‘It was a strange scenario to land to. I looked at my phone and had to blink a couple of times and pinch myself.’ Said the Magpies stopper.

‘I thought: What is going on? What is happening? My phone didn’t stop vibrating. I am not used to it, not many people are.

‘A few text messages were saying: What is going on? Which is a bit of a worry. I don’t know how many messages, it was constant. Something I am not used to and very funny when I realised what was happening and saw some of the images and then the boys started taking the mickey.’

When asked which of his new team-mates gave him the hardest time over his new found fame, Pope said that the ribbing was a joint effort from the changing room.

‘They were able to spread it out – there was so much worldwide. Every time I walked round the corner there was someone else. If it was one of the other lads I would do the same.’

Pope’s name trended number one in the UK and number 10 worldwide, while McDonalds promised a free breakfast to Toon Polls, if the goalie could keep a clean sheet against Brighton the following day – something he duly obliged with following Newcastle’s goalless draw at The Amex Stadium.

However, he wasn’t the only Nick Pope to attract attention following the poll going viral. Arizona based UFO expert Nick Pope was also the beneficiary of the buzz created by the the tweets and it wasn’t the first time the namesake’s paths have crossed, the Newcastle Nick Pope explained.

‘We had a bit of conflict a few years ago when something happened, I think he was getting hounded by opposition football fans so I had to tell people it wasn’t me. You never know, one day I might need some info on UFOs and at least I have a contact.’

Pope has settled into life at St James’ Park quickly, pulling off a string of impressive performances in Newcastle’s first three games.

It has led to calls for the Toon number one to become England’s new first choice goalie, but faces competition from current holder of the jersey Jordan Pickford as well as Aaron Ramsdale and Dean Henderson.
