The sought-after EE Rising Star Award recognises a performer who has demonstrated truly outstanding talent on the big screen in the past year and garnered attention from both the public and film industry.

It is the sole accolade at the EE British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) that is voted for by the public, despite the nominees being selected by the BAFTA juries.

The gong, previously known as the Orange Rising Star Award, was first established in 2006 and Scottish actor James McAvoy scooped the first win.

Rocks’ actress Bukky Bakray currently holds the coveted award. At the tender age of 19, she became the youngest EE Rising Star Award winner and one of the youngest nominees for the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role.

The award, now in its 17th year, was introduced after Mary Selway’s death in 2004.
