Nine Network bosses not impressed with new Today show duo

Georgie Gardner’s first week as co-host of Today with Karl Stefanovic failed to topple their Channel Seven breakfast rival, Sunrise, in the ratings.

And according to a Monday report by The Daily Telegraph, Nine Network bosses are ‘not impressed’ with the twosome’s results.

While TV’s official ratings period won’t start for another two weeks, senior executives are said to be ‘scrambling for ideas’ on how to grow Today’s audience numbers.

Channel Nine is reportedly ‘not impressed’ with Sunrise’s David Koch and Samantha Armytage beating Today by up to 40,000 viewers across five cities daily last week.

An ‘insider’ from the network alleged Nine senior executives ‘expected a closer race’ with Georgie, who previously co-hosted Today for five years, at the helm.

‘When the numbers came in there was a bit of shock at Nine,’ the ‘insider’ stated.

‘They are saying it is only because of the tennis, but with the cricket getting huge numbers that theory seems like a diversion,’ they added.

Daily Mail Australia has reached out to the Nine Network for further comment.

Sunrise pulled in a significant 287,000 viewers across all five capital cities mid-week on Wednesday, while Today brought in 249,000.

That number was slightly down on Georgie’s much-hyped Monday morning debut, which garnered 256,000 metro viewers for Today.

Many viewers commented on Georgie’s professionalism after the show on social media, but urged the network to think of Karl’s position.

‘Love Georgie, can’t stand Karl,’ wrote one viewer. ‘Hope Channel Nine wake up, he is not worth the $. How many more times does he have to appear drunk or hung-over’.
