‘No sentence enough’ for driver who killed granmother

An unlicensed driver who killed a grandmother in 2014 has been jailed for more than a decade.

Editha Alegre died shortly after the car she was traveling in was rammed by a stolen Landcruiser, which had run a red light.

Her husband Sancho, who was also in the car at the time, told media outside court on Friday that she was ‘the angel for all of our family’.

Jordan Conte, now 22, was found to be under the influence of ice and cannabis when he hit the Algere’s car almost three years ago.

His barrister told the court that he thought he was a passenger, and did not remember the accident at all.

Conte then fled from the scene and was found hiding nearby, according to 9NEWS.

He will be imprisoned for 14 years, and will not be eligible for parole until 2025,

‘It’s a good call from the judge, but for me, it’s the same thing. I lost everything,’ Mr Algere said tearfully.

He was holding his wife’s hand at the time she died.

Conte’s family have stood behind him, with his sister submitting a letter to the judge asking for a lenient sentence.

‘To lose a long term partner through the senseless criminality of another is a totally shocking thing,’ said Judge Andrew Colefax.

He added that the man had been a ‘menace’ on the road before the accident, adding his chances of rehabilitation were ‘not promising’.
