North Korea owes New York City $156,000 in unpaid parking tickets, it has been revealed.

The rogue state has amassed the shocking total after refusing to pay more than 1,300 tickets for its diplomatic vehicles since the 1990s. 

As home to the UN headquarters in Manhattan as well as dozens of foreign consulates, New York City issues special license plates to the members of diplomatic community.

But a spokesman for North Korea denies they have any unpaid fines.

NBC 4 first reported on the unpaid tickets and tracked down a North Korea diplomatic who said: ‘It’s not true. It is false. Whenever we have a ticket, we pay. 

‘Because, you know, if we have three tickets the city does not allow us to renew their permission.’ 

And North Korea is not the only nation with outstanding parking fines.

While they are technically required to pay the fines, the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations means foreign diplomats are protected from prosecution.
