Norway’s Princess Martha Louise takes exam to become a trotting driver

Princess Märtha Louise of Norway swapped her tiara for a helmet as she took an equestrian exam in Oslo today.

The mother-of-three, 46, was spotted in the Norwegian capital on Thursday taking the reigns in a trotting exam, also known as harness racing.

The sport requires the driver to race horses at a specific gait, while sitting in a two-wheeled cart pulled by the beast.

Dressed down in baggy trousers and a gilet, she passed the exam successfully, according to onlookers.

The daughter of Norway’s King Harald and Queen Sonia is their eldest child but due to the rules of succession, she is fourth in line after her brother Crown Prince Haakon and his two children.

It leaves the divorcée free to pursue her own career, which includes running an entertainment company and charitable foundation.

Märtha Louise, who hosted the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge during their trip to Norway in February, is known for taking a down-to-earth approach to royal life and posting refreshingly honest Instagram pictures.

Earlier this year, she shared a candid selfie ahead of a formal gala dinner, thanking her hair stylist and make-up artist for getting her read for the big event.

The royal recently returned from a spiritual retreat in India, shared a snap of herself enjoying a glass of bubbly at the airport with friends after their flight was delayed.

Märtha Louise has three daughters – Maud, Leah and Emma – but announced she was separating from her husband of 14 years Ari Behn in September 2016, admitting they felt ‘ashamed because we can no longer create the common safe harbor for our children’.

Theirs was the first divorce in the modern history of the Norwegian royal family.

On a webinar on Soulspring, which she co-founded with business partner Elisabeth Nordeng in 2007, she wrote: ‘I have the position I have in Norway, which means I have to share the things happening in my life whether positive or negative.

‘And, as you know, I’m going through a divorce, which is a very painful period in my life.

‘You can work at being more honest with yourself, and then deal directly with your unique and deep feelings.’

She added: ‘Of course, it is difficult and tedious, but it also means that you can process it and recover faster…Without that knowledge, I would not be here now.’

In December 2017, Martha Louise posted a jocular Instagram post saying she would like a boyfriend as her Christmas present.
