And, noughties pop star Vanessa Carlton, 43, looks completely different 21 years after finding fame with the release of her iconic hit song. 

She has ditched her glossy pop princess styling in favour of a lowkey boho look, with unkempt tresses and a penchant for wide-brim hats. 

Vanessa – born in Milford, Pennsylvania – was just 21-years-old when her debut single entered the music charts around the world, going to number one Australia. 

A Thousand Miles entered the top 10 in the UK, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, France and went to number five in the US Billboard Chart. Soon after, Vanessa’s debut album, Be Not Nobody, went platinum.

After the success of her debut album, the singer has released many more, including Be Not Nobody, Harmonium, Heroes & Thieves, Rabbits on the Run, Liberman and Love is an Art.

The American star came out as bisexual while headlining Nashville Pride in June 2010, telling the audience: “I’ve never said this before, but I am a proud bisexual woman.” 

Vanessa and husband John McCauley, 37, were married in December 2013 in a ceremony officiated by Stevie Nicks.

The couple first met after the Deer Tick frontman contacted the pop singer on Twitter, with John previously revealing in an interview with Billboard: ‘We met through Patrick Hallahan, from My Morning Jacket.

‘He introduced us after I went on Vanessa’s Twitter and said, “Hey, VC let’s get a beer,” I had just figured out how to use Twitter so I was really proud of myself.’

The couple welcomed a daughter named Sidney in January 2015. 

Vanessa announced that she was expecting in June 2014, just eight months after enduring a tragic ectopic pregnancy. 

The star later suffered a ruptured tube and internal bleeding. After surgery, her entire right fallopian tube was removed.
