Novak Djokovic finally completes the career Golden Slam after beating Carlos Alcarez to win a gold medal in his fifth Olympic Games

Novak Djokovic has become the fifth player in tennis history to win the Golden Slam as a singles player.

The 37-year-old from Serbia – playing in his fifth Olympic Games – beat Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz 7-6 (3) 7-6 (2) in the men’s singles final at Paris 2024 on Sunday afternoon.

Djokovic had previously won 10 Australian Opens, seven Wimbledon titles, four US Opens and three French Opens.

But a bronze medal in Beijing in 2008 had been his best Olympic result until Sunday.

The only other players to have won all four Grand Slam singles titles and an Olympic gold in singles are Rafael Nadal, Andre Agassi, Steffi Graf and Serena Williams – who was among the crowd.

Djokovic sunk to his knees after converting match point against Alcaraz – a player who has beaten him in each of the last two Wimbledon finals.

Both players were in tears after the match.

After getting to his feet, Djokovic climbed into the crowd to join his family and support team.

Alcaraz struggled to hide his disappointment at having to settle for silver. But the 21-year-old will likely get plenty more chances to go for gold, while this was probably Djokovic’s final shot at Olympic glory.

Speaking to Eurosport after his victory, Djokovic said: ‘It was an incredible fight and I had to play my best tennis.’

Djokovic added: ‘I put my heart, my soul, everything to win gold. I did it for my country first – for Serbia.’

This summer’s bronze medal in the men’s singles event was won by Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti, who beat Felix Auger Aliassime of Canada 6-4 1-6 6-3 on Saturday.
