NRL 2022: Ex-WAG Phoebe Burgess defends ’embarrassing’ Instagram fail

Phoebe Burgess has responded to criticism of her latest sponsored Instagram post.

The former rugby league WAG, 33, was trolled on Friday over her ‘cringeworthy’ video for high-end fashion boutique Lee Mathews in which she was seen leaving the label’s flagship Sydney store carrying a noticeably empty shopping bag.

After being asked by one of her followers why the bag was empty, Phoebe confirmed it was simply a prop and she was demonstrating the label’s clothes by wearing them.

‘You need some beautiful clothes in your bag,’ the fan commented, to which Phoebe replied: ‘Haha yes, but the idea here is that I am wearing them.’

The Bowral socialite had made the glaring mistake a day earlier, when she shared the video of herself strutting out of a Lee Mathews store in Sydney’s east.

Looking like an eastern suburbs Carrie Bradshaw, Phoebe sashayed down the street carrying a black clutch and grey shopping bag.

After taking a few steps out of the store, the former journalist passed the shopping bag from one hand to the other, offering a quick glimpse of its contents.

Awkwardly, there was nothing inside.

All the gear, no idea: Instagram watchdog Celeb Spellcheck soon picked up on the gaffe, which made it appear as though Phoebe had visited the store without buying anything but still took a bag as a souvenir

Fans found the video hilarious, calling it ‘cringe’, ’embarrassing’ and ‘awkward’.

Some even said it threw up philosophical questions about the meaning of life, like the famous plastic bag scene from American Beauty.

The Instagram fail comes after Phoebe was accosted by former Married At First Sight star Nasser Sultan at Australian Fashion Week in Sydney earlier this month.

Nasser, 55, was pictured harassing the ex-wife of NRL star Sam Burgess in the front row at the Oroton showcase at Carriageworks on May 10.

An apologetic Nasser later told Daily Mail Australia he was ‘really embarrassed’ about his behaviour around Phoebe, but denied gatecrashing the show or stealing anyone’s seat, as had been previously reported.

‘[The incident with security] really embarrassed me. I felt like a f**kwit… but I didn’t take anyone’s seat or sneak in,’ the former music promoter said.

‘I was invited to that show, saw Phoebe went over to say hello. Why can’t you say hello to people these days?’

‘Security were saying I stole Kate Waterhouse’s seat. I did not. I was there for a few seconds just taking a photo with Phoebe and then moved back to my seat.’

He added: ‘They said I was being a pest and that the designers didn’t want me at their shows… that’s not true. I have been invited to many of shows.

‘I have been going for years. I have no shame sitting in the back row. I am happy just to be there.’

During the Oroton showcase, Nasser had briefly slipped into racing royalty Kate Waterhouse’s seat when she moved away and tugged on Phoebe’s designer coat to try to get her attention.

However, the mother of two turned her back on Nasser as he repeatedly asked for a photo and tried to start a conversation.

Nasser ‘eventually gave up and walked off,’ an onlooker told Daily Mail Australia.

But he buttonholed Phoebe once again after the runway show, and she politely agreed to a photo before motioning him to go away.
